The Wisconsin Highland Games attract professional and amateur Highland athletes from around the world, from Olympians, national champions, and world record holders to local amateurs.

The weekend is divided into Caledonian (Scottish) events on Saturday, and Hibernian (Irish) events on Sunday. The two versions of heavy athletics differ sometimes in the equipment used, sometimes in the rules, and sometimes both, for a particular event.

The most popular event is Turning the Caber, in which athletes heave a log and attempt to rotate it so it lands at 12:00 in front of them. At the end of each day, athletes try a special challenge round turning the "Badger Stick", a giant 141-pound, 16-foot 8-½-inch caber!

Other events include throwing weights and stones for distance, weight toss for height (tossing over a suspended bar), the sheaf toss (tossing a sack of hay with a pitchfork), and the hammer throw.
